Why successful entrepreneurs are walkers and why you should be, too
In my daily search for entrepreneurial podcasts and YouTube video interviews, there seems to be a unifying theme among the guests: they are all walkers.
Whether it be interviews with Dan Koe, the social media and creator platform rising star; Cal Newport, the anti-social media and deep work advocate professor; or the LinkedIn solopreneur, Justin Welsh, they all mention a daily routine which includes going on walks.
From what I can glean from their discussions, these successful entrepreneurs tout walking benefits that include:
Clarity in thinking
Feeling alive and invigorated
Generating ideas
Opportunity to reset
Breathing
Relaxing
Stress-free break from work
Creativity
In a popular podcaster and Youtuber Dr. Rangan Chateree’s interview with neuroscientist Shane O’Mara author of In Praise of Walking: The New Science of How We Walk And Why It’s Good For Us calls walking our natural superpower.
The neurologist cited a study following a group of 70 year olds split between a group who took walks three days a week vs. a sedentary group for a year.
The walking group showed increased memory and attention, improved blood flow and performed better on psychological tests compared to their counterparts.
In the interview, O’Mara emphasized that it’s never too late to start to benefit from the many healthy walking attributes.
These days I, too, have implemented a walking regimen into my morning and work-day routine.
When I wake up, depending on how much time I have, I split my walking choices in three parts: short (10-15 minutes), medium (25 minute), and long (40 minute)
Everytime I come back from any of these walks, I feel alive, reinvigorated, and energized
The many benefits of walking have been well documented, so you just need to be committed and disciplined to add this wonderful superpower to your day.
For an overall life improvement, get yourself a step counter, get outside, and take more walks!
