My story

In 2012, when I moved back from Florida to my native Minnesota I was seeking out import-export and supply chain jobs.

I didn’t know where to start, so I attended as many networking events as I could and took courses at the local community college on global trade, international business, and supply chain.

I sought out and invited people to meet for coffee who had career titles I thought I would be interested in: supply chain analyst, global trade compliance specialist, import-export analyst, logistics specialist, and Customs broker.

These career titles seemed exciting, in-demand and global, attributes that resonated with me.

However, I found it tough breaking into the industry to gain the experience I needed.

The reason? I lacked the necessary credentials employers were looking for to get a foot in the door.

As I joined the local supply chain professional associations and networked with leaders in my field, I started to figure out what credentials were both in high demand and suitable for me, how to study for them, and how to leverage them in job-hunting.

From this vantage point, after ten years in the industry, I discovered the essential skills and education to succeed in supply chain.

Trade Compliance

The majority of my career has been in trade compliance roles.

As someone who had an interest international business and Asia, I naturally gravitated to trade, import-export, and supply chain.

However, earlier in my career I didn’t have much success landing jobs in my area of interest, which were too broad and not practical positions companies were looking to fill.

It wasn’t until I stumbled upon trade compliance and Customs broker roles that combined my interest to what the world needs.

Trade compliance is simply helping companies comply with US federal rules and regulations on the importation and exportation of goods coming into or leaving the US.

As a compliance professional, you play an important role in the supply chain by helping shipments clear Customs.

I help by explaining the various trade compliance positions and typical career trajectory and teach you how to become a licensed Customs broker, the gold standard in the international trade world.
